Maywood is an incorporated city in the county of Los Angeles and is the third-smallest incorporated city in the county. Maywood is third-smallest, with a population of 29,984 since January 2009, only behind Hawaiian Gardens the smallest and Cudahy the second smallest. The population of the city is relatively young and because of this, the government has built a community activity sport building, a half-sized Olympic swimming pool, a new park, along with an elementary school, a high school and another high school set to open this year, 2010. The new pool and high school were built to accommodate these young families, the same is true for the free WiFi the city offers to computer users along Slauson and Atlantic Boulevards. Maywood is the only city in the South East Los Angeles area to have free wireless internet and it has had many benefit especially for the young students living in the area. The city has two major parks, the new Maywood River Park and the older Maywood Park. The older Maywood Park, has baseball fields and is home to the Maywood Activity Center which was opened in 1999. The Activity Center includes and indoor basketball court and gymnasium. Famous basketball players including Marvin Benard have played at the Maywood Activity Center. The other park, Maywood River Park, has handball courts, soccer fields and basketball courts for all visitors to make use of. Due to its youthfulness, the city uses the Los Angeles Fire Department for its fire protections, but t does have its own police protection with the Maywood Police Department. The city also provides police services by contract to the small city of Cudahy. The city only has one library, the Cesar Chavez Library which is operated by the Los Angeles County Public Library system.
